International initiatives such as Vodafone’s #CodeLike AGirl are addressing the gender gap head-on. Across 26 countries, Vodafone has pledged to provide free coding training to 1000 schoolgirls, to encourage entry into the growing tech sector, where women are still woefully under-represented.
In our own backyard, aged care worker and equal pay advocate Kristine Bartlett was recently named New Zealander of the year. She spearheaded the landmark case that went all the way to the Supreme Court and resulted in a pay increase for thousands of workers in aged care and home care, work that Kristine successfully argued was underpaid and under-valued because it was predominantly undertaken by women.
The Ministry of Women offers a booklet for employers who want to know if they have a gender pay gap and what to do about it.
Let’s remain encouraged, but not complacent. Let’s continue to hold organisations to account. Let’s acknowledge unconscious bias.
