Diwali - Festival of Lights

Saturday 04/11/2023

The Festival of Lights! … it’s an exciting time with events celebrating Diwali happening all over Aotearoa and the world.  Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists to mark different historical events with stories that symbolise the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair.

The festival occurs on Kartik Amavasya – New Moon day.  It is the darkest night at the end of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin and the start of the month of Kartika.  It’s a five day celebration and the fourth day of Diwali in the Hindu New Year.  Diwali has a number of spellings but they all honour Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Auckland Diwali Festival takes place at Aotea Square on Saturday November 4th and Sunday November 5th from 12.00-9.00pm.

Planet FM wishes everyone a happy and festive Diwali filled with love, light and fabulous food!
